Zanzibar Tips for That Hakuna Matata Life
Zanzibar might be known for dreamy beaches, but there’s so much more to it—especially if you head to the northeast coast. We spent a week there in early March, and here’s what we’d recommend to anyone planning a trip: what to eat, where to stay, and how to dive into the best parts (literally).
1. Slow Down and Connect
Yes, the beaches are stunning. Yes, the northeast coast is peaceful and picture-perfect. But what truly made our trip memorable? The people. These people are warm, open, and curious—and connecting with them brings the island to life in a whole new way.
A simple “Jambo” (hello) or “Asante” (thank you) can open doors. Chat with your dive guide, your driver, the woman selling mangos by the road. In Zanzibar you will find people from all parts of Tanzania (people from the Kilimanjaro area of Arusha, local Zanzibaris, Maasai tribes). Speak to them, you'll learn a lot. You’ll get real stories, unexpected tips, and plenty of smiles.
Pair that human connection with the slower pace of life in villages like Matemwe, Pongwe or Kiwengwa, and you’ll find the kind of laid-back rhythm that vacations are made for. Think hammock days, coconut drinks, and no rush to be anywhere.
Hack: Learn a few Swahili phrases before you go. Locals truly appreciate the effort—and words like “pole pole” (slowly, slowly) capture the island’s vibe perfectly.

2. Explore the waters of Mnemba Atoll
If you love sealife too, Mnemba Atoll is where you want to be. This protected marine reserve off Zanzibar’s northeast coast is teeming with life—dolphins, turtles, rays, and schools of colorful fish—all in warm, crystal-clear waters.
Early swim for snorkellers reccomended! Honestly, the snorkeling scene around Mnemba can feel like a floating market. Tourists from all over Zanzibar are coming here to admire these waters. During the day it’s chaotic and not exactly peaceful. So if you want to see amazing sealife go before the crowd does!
If you are up for diving, on the other hand, you go beneath all that noise—into the quiet, vibrant world below. You’ll avoid the crowds, feel more and see more.
Hack: Go early in the morning before the traffic starts, between 7 and 8 is a good time. And bring reef-safe sunscreen—Zanzibar’s marine life will thank you.

3. Taste the Spices (and Eat Like a Local)
Zanzibar’s nickname isn’t random—it really is the Spice Island. Expect food bursting with flavor: think coconut, cardamom, cloves, and chili, all mixed into curries, grilled seafood, and street snacks.
Try:
- Zanzibar pizza – have you ever heard about Zanzibar pizza? it’s a delicious pan-fried stuffed dough snack that’s addictive.
- Seafood curry – often homemade, simple and delicious. Fish is fresh from the area and it's incredibly tasty!
- Local cocktail, mocktails and beer – many beach bars mix drinks using locally brewed kombucha as a base. It’s refreshing, tangy, and gives your drink a unique island twist—whether you’re going alcoholic or not. Also it's a must to try the different locally brewed beers like Serengeti!
Want to take it further? Do a spice farm tour or a local cooking class. It’s a great way to connect with culture through food.

Final Takeaway:
Zanzibar is perfect if you're after sunshine, slow living, and underwater adventures—without the noise of over-tourism. It’s ideal for curious travelers who want to explore and unwind, rather than tick off boxes.
Whether you're a diver, a beach lover, or just someone who appreciates a chat over a local aperitivo and enjoying good sunset, the northeast coast of Zanzibar has it all!
Keep exploring—our next adventure might be your next favorite.
