Best of Istria: From Rovinj to Pula, Where to Eat, Swim, and Stay

We visited Croatia’s Istrian peninsula in late June, just as summer hit its stride. With sparkling bays, ancient towns, and some of the best seafood we’ve ever tasted, this corner of the Adriatic quickly won us over. Here’s how we explored, ate, and hacked our way through the highlights of Istria 🇭🇷
Travel: Glamping, Crystal Bays, and Ancient Wonders
Our basecamp was Arena One 99 Glamping, just outside Pula. Waking up in a luxury tent surrounded by pine trees, with the sea just steps away, was the perfect blend of comfort and nature.
One of the highlights of the trip was visiting Kamenjak National Park, a rugged coastal paradise. Picture turquoise water, rocky coves, and swimming spots that feel totally untouched. It’s a dream for anyone who loves a mix of nature and freedom.
Tucked inside Kamenjak, the Safari Bar feels like something out of a movie. Built into a bamboo forest right by the shore, it’s the perfect spot for a cold drink and a bite after a swim. Try to stick around for sunset. The view from the cliffs is unforgettable.
Back in Pula, the Roman Arena stands proudly in the center of town. Built in the 1st century AD, it’s actually older than the Colosseum in Rome and one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheaters in the world 🏛️ You can walk through its arches and imagine the roar of ancient crowds. It’s still used today for concerts and events.
We also made a quick stop in Rovinj (Rovigno). This coastal town oozes Venetian charm with its pastel houses, narrow streets, and a hilltop church offering a full 360° view over the Adriatic. Perfect for an early evening stroll.

Eat: From Sea to Plate in Medulin
For food, Mizerija in Medulin stole the show. Set right in the town’s port, this family-run spot serves fish that comes straight off the boat. The staff greeted us like old friends and made us feel right at home.
We started with a mixed plate of shellfish and clams, a beautifully presented dish full of flavor and freshness. The grilled fish that followed was perfectly seasoned and served with just the right sides to let the ingredients speak for themselves. Paired with a glass of local white wine and the sound of the sea just a few meters away, it was one of those meals that stays with you.
If you're in the area, this is the kind of place where you'll want to linger a little longer and maybe even come back for more.

Hack: Tips for Making the Most of Istria
✅ Go off-season if you can. Late spring or early autumn brings great weather, fewer crowds, and better prices
🩴 Pack reef shoes for swimming in rocky bays. Your feet will thank you
📱 Buy the park ticket online before heading to Kamenjak. It saves time and guarantees access on busy days
🛏️ Glamping is worth it. Arena One 99 offers that rare combo of comfort and location
🚗 Rent a car. Public transport is limited and the best spots are tucked away

Final Thoughts
Istria blends the best of Croatia: rich history, clear waters, and local flavors. Whether you're glamping by the sea, exploring ancient ruins, or sharing grilled fish with new friends, it’s the kind of place that quietly captures your heart and makes you want to come back 💙
